Everyone needs a vacation now and then. Being away from home, relaxing, and experiencing new adventures can be a great escape. Yet people often avoid vacations altogether because they don't think they can afford the one they want. With a little preparation and planning, it is possible to find a happy medium and organize a truly affordable and memorable vacation. Following are a few cost cutting tips which allow you to enjoy your time away without breaking the bank.

Know Your Limits

Before you begin planning your vacation, review your budget carefully to determine what kind and how long of a vacation you can realistically afford. You may want the dream vacation, but it may be outside your means. You can rest much easier if you know you are taking a vacation you can afford. Sometimes it's the least expensive vacations that end up being the most memorable.

Plan Ahead

Try to plan your vacation as far in advance as possible. The best deals on vacations are generally posted a year or two ahead of time. Furthermore, by planning and

paying (in part or in full) for your trip ahead of time, you can be better prepared for last minute travel needs and expenses during the trip. It's also smart to plan daily activities ahead of time so you can budget in advance and be prepared when you arrive.

Know Your Options

Take the time to find the best possible price on accommodations without sacrificing the quality of your stay. Travel sites like PriceLine.com and Kayak.com will search different packages to help find the best deals. Don't feel like you have to stay at a pricey five-star resort in order to have a quality vacation. You can save as much as $50-$100 per night by staying at a reputable two- or three-star hotel instead. The accommodations will be acceptable, and if you're spending so much time in your hotel room that there is a noticeable difference, you aren't vacationing correctly! Another option to save money on lodgings is to stay with family or friends in the area. Even if only for part of your stay, you'll save hundreds of dollars that can be used on your trip for other things.

Seek Out Discounts

Wherever you decide to stay on your vacation, research the available discounts. Many hotels and resorts offer discounts to AAA members, AARP members, military, and other groups. However, discount information is not always
