Love What
You Do:

Turning your hobby
into a career

A hobby can be defined as "An activity or interest pursued outside one's regular occupation and engaged in primarily for pleasure," but what if it didn't have to be independent of your regular occupation? What if you could enjoy your hobby all the time, and make money while doing it?

If you are in the market for a career change, are searching for a job in these tough economic times, or are simply looking for a way to make some extra income, look first to what you love to do. There are many ways to turn your hobby into an income-producing venture.

First, consider pursuing a job at an established business that relates to your hobby. For example, someone who enjoys cooking as a pastime might enjoy working at a catering service, restaurant or in food photography. Likewise, someone who enjoys

woodworking might consider employment at a custom furniture or home supply store. You might also consider teaching your hobby to others at an elementary, middle or high school or at a local community center or community college. You could even extend your expertise to a larger audience by creating an instructional blog. If you are able to garner a significant number of followers, you can earn additional income through ad space on your blog site.

Another option is to start your own business selling the product or service that you create through your hobby. If you decide to go this route, it is important to consider all aspects and implications of your pursuit and make sure that it is the right fit for you.

Just For Fun

Hobbies can be a very enjoyable way to pass the time, when there is no pressure of other responsibilities. If you have to do it all the time, with deadlines to meet and orders to fill, will it still be fun? Avoid the tragedy of losing a beloved hobby by considering all the ramifications of turning your hobby into a business.
